A host of English clubs are chasing New York Red Bull's young striker Juan Agudelo, who has experienced a meteoric rise in US football in the last 18 months. The Colombian-born US international has been likened to New York team-mate Thierry Henry in his style of play, and has attracted attention from Arsenal. They are facing competition from QPR, Swansea, Leicester City and Southampton for his signature, as well as some French and Dutch teams. New York are understood to be reluctant to let him leave, but would consider bids of £4m and over.

After Southampton had £5m bids rejected by both Bristol City and Burnley for their strikers Nicky Maynard and Jay Rodriguez - Southampton have turned their attentions towards Jermaine Beckford, Marvin Sordell and Juan Agudelo.
Saints' bid for Beckford was rejected last week, along with bids from Leicester and Nottingham Forest. It's thought improved bids will be made however.

Southampton hoping to sell Jason Puncheon to QPR on Monday after a bid of £900,000 was accepted by Southampton. The want a way winger has been training with the reserves and Saints simply want his wages of their books.
This will then make Saints move for a centre back and a new striker Marvin Emmnes of Middlesbrough.
Southampton have had a £2.5m accepted by Boro for the hot shot forward.

Michael Owen could on the verge of a loan move to Southampton until January with his Man Utd career even more in decline following the emergence of Danny Wellbeck this season.
Owen almost joined Saints during the summer on a permanent deal only to be offered a new one year deal at Old Trafford and could now be tempted to join Saints to help the promotion push after their incredible start to the season.
SAF is thought to have given Owen the green light to move on loan providing the deal allows Man Utd to have an instant recall for Owen should they need it.

Burnley captain Chris McCann could be a surprise pre-deadline £1.5 million target for ambitious Southampton who have made a superb start to the season and sit proudly at the top of the Championship.
McCann is said to be very unhappy with the lack of ambition at Burnley and feels his careeer would benefit with a move to the south coast where he could link up with his pal Jack Cork who was on loan with the Clarets last season.
After two injury-hit seasons, Burnley chairman Barry Kilby would probably let McCann go for as little as £1.5 million as the Clarets continue to slash their wage bill.

Southampton and West Ham are both chasing MK Dons hot-shot Sam Baldock. The Hammers have recently had a £1.5m bid rejected but it is thought both clubs are set to make bids of around £2m within the next few days.
This comes a week after both clubs gave up on the persuit of Nicky Maynard with the Robins wanting £8m up front for the striker who will leave on a free at the end of next season, or for a nominal fee in January.

Martyn Waghorn is close to finalising his £1.5m move to Hull City whilst Leicester are set to place a final bid for Nicky Maynard in the coming days.

Southampton meanwhile are preparing a last ditch attempt to lure Jay Rodriguez away from Burnley with a deal worth £6.5m. £5.5m cash with a player rated at £1m heading to The Turf in return - thought to be either Jason Puncheon or Lee Barnard.

We definitely need defensive cover, after Saturday's performance. Most games so far we've attacked and won well but when you get a side like Leicester playing us at our own game we come unstuck and the defending, from what I have seen on the highlights, was laughable.

In a busy last couple of days of the transfer window Southampton are set to bring in up to 4 players.

The top target for centre back is Cedric Mongongo from Monaco and a bid of just under £3 million has been submitted, with Matt Kilgallon the back-up option.

The club are also looking to push through a deal for Crystal Palace right back Nathaniel Clyne but it is 50/50 as to whether it will go through before the deadline with the Eagles reluctant to lose one of their brightest prospects, although a softener of cash plus Danny Butterfield could be on the table.

Jason Puncheon looks likely to depart for Millwall although Nigel Adkins is keen to sign Lions winger James Henry as part of the deal. Puncheon plus 500,000 could allow him to get his man.

Finally, the club have a number of targets upfront with Jay Rodriguez and Jermaine Beckford the top targets. A deal for one of those will be completed before tomorrow's deadline with bids of around 5 million submitted for both.

Jermaine Beckford - 5m: Everton originally wanted 6m, but have backed down slightly as they want the money to fund their own deals
Nthaniel Clyne 4m: Won't sign a new contract and Palace have decided to cash in
David Wheater - Loan with a clause making the deal permanent for 3.5m should Southampton secure promotion. Out of the frame at Bolton regardless of Cahill's status

Dont expect much action to be honest. See Leicester have had a£6.5m bid for Rangers striker rejected, suspect Rodrigues or Maynard will end up there.

Either Jermaine Beckford (who worked with Adkins before) or Jay Rodriguez will also sign as Southampton are worried if David Connolly gets injured.

Yep. Garbage. However, maybe Saints were in for some of these players and failed to land them for whatever reason. To me, that's more of a concern for not being in for them at all as it tells us there is something wrong. Rodriguez wanted to stay at Burnley. Fair enough, loyalty is a rare thing in football (and, while it's not nice being knocked back, loyalty ought to be applauded) but why waste the whole summer chasing him?

What is the club doing wrong? NC doesn't want to be held to ransom by ridiculous demands for player fees, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but being stubborn and cutting your nose off to spite your face is. Like it or loathe it (and I loathe it) footballers are expensive, the fees are high and, if we want to compete if and when we ever make it back to the Prem, then the club is going to have to splash the cash a bit, or we're going to end up going straight back down again and what is the point of that? I don't want Saints to be the new West Brom, up and down (parachute payments would come in handy, though! ). I don't mean 'go mad' a la Skates, Foxes and Wet Spam but, let's face it, if you aren't prepared to 'speculate to accumulate' a little bit you're still going to fail.

FWIW, on a more positive note, I am pleased the club got Jack Cork. Steve Ridder looks like he will be good and I am positive about Danny Fox. I've no idea about the 'Celtic reject' but I hope he does well and we end up wanting to keep him.

I have to agree that something is not quite right. We either bid to low, take to long, or unable to convince players of the future at St Marys. Facts are we were interested in the following

Austin (went to burnley)
Harley (went to swansea then brighton)
CMS (went to brighton)
Maynard (stayed)
Sharp (stayed)
Rodrigues (stayed)
Gorkkess (went to reading)
Beckford (went to Leicester)
Baldock (went to West Ham)

all of those I think would have improved strength of the squad, and a worry that out of 9 targets got none.

Yes great we got Cork, De ridder looks promising and Fox ought to be okay but we are light in Striker dept and for whatever reason Nicola Cortese seems to struggle when dealing with players in demand as the list above seems to indicate.
