Amidst talk that Nigel Adkins is looking to spend big to bring in a striker a few targets have emerged. It is thought that Adkins does not hold interest in Maynard as he worries about his injury record (2 severe leg injuries at 24) and Long who is not going to another championship team.

With a largely unused transfer budget and an incoming windfall from Chamberlain's transfer to Arsenal for 12m, Adkins has a huge budget and has been told that he can offer wages up to 45k to get his man/

Adkins has four players in mind, although he will only sign one

Jay Rodriguez - 4m Mail incorrectly reported Saints were after Fox as well. The most likely to sign as he is rumoured to be keen to leave as he is unimpressed With Burnley's lack of ambition in the transfer market and lack of effort to keep Eagles and Mears.

Jelle Vossen - 8m, the club know that this is a long shot and would be a massive coup, however Genk are thought to be satisfied with the fee offered and Vossen has intimated to their board that he will listen to Southampton's offer.

Frazier Campbell - 3m; said to be unhappy at the lack of games at Sunderland and is looking to get his career back on track, West Ham, Forest and Brighton are also keen on Campbell

Danny Fox has completed his move to Southampton. Burnley are close to confirming the signing of Ryan Shotton from Stoke City who will play CB allowing Ben Mee to play LB.
Southampton did bid for Rodriguez but the offer was rejected thought to be around 4m. They then turned there attentions to Ebanks-Blake in a deal worth 3.5m with a bid accepted by Wolves.

Saints are set to sign Nicky Maynard after they are in advanced talks with Bristol City about agreeing a fee (discussing appearance and goals add ons) while a fee of £5.25million is close to being accepted.
The Ebanks-Blake rumours are NOT true.
Saints' move for Jay Rodriguez ended after Burnley reportedly wanted £4million for the striker but Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese's valuation was not that high, so they have turned their FULL attention to Maynard.
Southampton are still looking for a centre-back after Dedryck Boyata decided to stay at Man City and fight to try and get into the first team squad. Bristol City were also interested.

With a distinct lack of prem interest, Joe Cole is now looking to the Championship to resurrect his career. He has been in serious discussions with Leicester, Saints, and WHU over a move. There was also interest from Forest, but Cole wouldn't discuss a move with them as he doesn't think McClaren is a competent coach.
As of right now it is thought he favours a move back to West Ham, but is growing frustrated at their insistence that they sell one of their higher earners (Parker , Cole or Green) before moving the deal on. Sources say that this hesitation could lead to Southampton winning the race for the England star as he likes their style of play and was impressed with their manager, who sees Cole's mix of technical skill and experience as a potential difference maker in a promotion push.

Southampton and Burnley had a double bid: 1.8m-Fox and 3.2m-Rodriguez bid agreed. However after Rodriguez getting 4 tuesday night Burnley appear to want more for this young prospect. Between now and Saints vs Ipswich next tuesday, expect to see whether saints up their bid in order to land Rodriguez, Persue Ebanks-Blake after having 3.5m bid accepted or, i wouldn't rule out Maynard as he hasn't signed a new deal with Bristol City. Adkins want to land his man before Ipswich and although at this moment i believe Rodriguez is most likely, especially after landing his former Burnley team mate, Danny Fox, although Ebanks-Blake for 3.5m would be a bargain

Although on Solent at 12 it was not on at 2pm.

Moneybags Leicester are favourites to beat Southampton and Ipswich in the race to sign Jimmy Bullard after the midfielder's contract was terminated by Hull City pending appeal.
Unless he appeals, Bullard will be free to look for a new club but only the Foxes have the money to offer anywhere near the £45k-a-week he was earning at Hull.
Saints are unwilling to go above £30k-a-week for fear of upsetting their other players in their strict wage structure while Ipswich would have to move a couple of players out to afford the 32-year-old's wages.

Saints manager Nigel Adkins also wants a centre half to bolster his defence and has a list of names that he will try.
Top of the list is Kaspars Gorkss. Saints have had a £750,000 bid rejected by QPR last week but have come back with a £800,000 plus want-away winger Jason Puncheon, and QPR are considering accepting the offer.
If a deal is reached, Southampton will announce that the deal for Gorkss was agreed with the fee for Gorkss cash only, but Puncheon WILL be part of the deal and not sold seperately to QPR.
This will be done because Nicola Cortese doesn't want the fans to think that Saints aren't getting the best deal for Puncheon, but indeed they are.
Deal could be done over the weekend.
