'Loan market beckons for the defence
Tuesday, 16th September 2008
With Saints small squad once again fully stretched at the back, the club are expected to look to the loan market to add depth to the squad.
The line-up on Sunday said it all: a 20 year old converted midfielder at right back; a 22 year old converted midfielder at left back; a 19 year old debutant at centre back and a 20 year old utility defender cum midfielder at centre back.
Out of the side were two experienced centre backs through injury, Svensson and Thomas, and, strangely, Perry to add more pace to the backline against QPR's quick counters.
The club did of course try to buy a centre back at the end of the transfer window, Anthony Gerrard from Walsall, but the bid did not meet their valuation of the player.
The question is did they do so due to the loss of Wayne Thomas or because it had become apparent that Michael Svensson was still struggling with his knee?
The club maintain that he was still training ahead of a visit to Sweden for a check-up, but his below par performance against Blackpool was an indication that he has been struggling to get back to match fitness.
We all hope that Killer can get back to somewhere near 100%, but even without him the club need another centre back to cover both the current and the inevitable future injuries in an attritional position that has been an Achilles heel for Saints ironically ever since Svensson's original injury.
Although the permanent transfer window is shut, the loan window has re-opened and Saints will be looking for cover at the right price with a run of games likely to stretch the squad to its limit.'

Re: Saints looking to loan a defender?
Why not go back for Gerrard with a promise to buy . Could give one of our kids on loan or trade an old un.
Re: Saints looking to loan a defender?
Jiller? Got excited for a mo! Actually it's is quite a cool name, reminiscent of J-Dilla (for those true hip hop fans out there, not the Fiddy-cent types!)

Oh yeah!
Still having regular contractions, perhaps they're not Braxton Hicks after all!

Re: Saints looking to loan a defender?
Would it be a good idea to play him in the Rotherham match against a side that will be trying to win their Cup Final. They will be at our lot looking for a killing and Killer I would like to save for a more important game.
Give Mills a go is what I say.

Re: Saints looking to loan a defender?
With the list of defenders injured/unavailable growing, it seems a loan could be useful. I wonder who is available...
Re: Saints looking to loan a defender?
WE SEEM TO BE IN A POSITION SIMILAR TO LAST YEARS. DIFFERENCE BEING THAT WE HAVE A MANAGER PREPARED TO USE OUR KIDS. SOONER OR LATER WE WILL HAVE NO CHOICE TO USE THEM SO BETTER TO LET THEM PLAY WHILST WE HAVE AN EXPERIENCED PLAYER TO HELP THEM. WHAT WILL WE DO IF PERRY GETS INJURED? KILLER LOOKS LIKE BEING A BIT PART PLAYER WHO MIGHT BE BETTER USED IN TRAINING AND COACHING.

Saints in the market for loan signing
6:50am Friday 26th September 2008
JAN Poortvliet could delve into the loan market again to bolster his Saints squad.
The head coach has been forced to deal with a number of injuries and absences over the last few weeks that have limited his options.
He said if a suitable player became available, then he would be interested.
Saints have already signed Chelsea defender Jack Cork on loan until January.
Spurs’ striker Tomas Pekhart is also at St Mary’s on a temporary basis until the New Year.
“Every possibility is a possibility,” said Poortvliet.
“When there’s a good player who would want to come here, or we want to have, we’ve got to do it.
“We have to look at it, because at the moment we have not got a big squad.”

Yet we can afford to let Dyer go out on loan??
Re: Saints looking to loan a defender?
Dyer has pace but wastes possession far more than he uses it effectively. Why though do we need another forward? Beg borrow or steal a couple of good old fashioned stoppers.
Re: Saints looking to loan a defender?
We haven't signed anyone and that is becoming a cause for concern. Ollie is likely to be a regular at sitting out a few games and we need to know that Wotton won't be used as his cover.
Re: Saints looking to loan a defender?
Cork only has two months left with us and that is another reason to worry.
Re: Saints looking to loan a defender?
Wouldn't be surprised to see Jan try Spiderman in defence again....but I've a feeling he is wasted there....
Re: Saints looking to loan a defender?
Maybe we can find a few schoolboy defenders. They won't ost a lot.

Re: Saints looking to loan a defender?
They took there time but Pearce seems a relatively reasonable loanee. Pity it's only short term though.
