FANS of the hit Brit comedy ANUVAHOOD can finally get their hands on a copy of the film when it is released on DVD this month (July). We caught up with actress Portia Freno to talk about her debut in Adam Deacon’s hilarious comedy…


IN ANUVAHOOD

For any of our readers who haven’t seen Anuvahood, tell us a bit about the film
It's a British comedy, a coming of age film that highlights real and serious issues surrounding youth today, but is delivered in a light-hearted and comedic way. It's quite different to what we've had before; although you could compare it to the American hit "Friday", and the UK needed it's own version of Friday! It sees "wasteman" Kay go through ups and downs as a young, confused boy and finally grow up, after nearly losing all of his friends and putting his parents in debt! It's very funny. Tyrone (the bully) is a fantastic character. Adam picked the cast very well.


WITH ADAM DEACON IN THE FILM

This was your debut film role wasn’t it? – how did you handle it?
Yes, it was my debut film role. I think I handled it very well. The feedback I got was positive so that's always a good sign. Adam said he was very happy as I didn't try to over act which is a common problem with many actors, especially in comedy. I think the chemistry between Kay and Persia was believable and I loved our scene; Kay totally embarrassed himself. I remember being in the cinema during the premiere and hearing everyone's reactions and it felt good to know it was being enjoyed. I may be used to watching myself but never as another character and on a big screen! So I was slightly nervous but much more excited than anything else.



Tell us a bit about your character
Persia is fierce; sexy, classy, possibly slightly intimidating, but actually quite sweet. She tries to give Kay a chance as she genuinely finds his efforts quite cute, but will not put up with any nonsense, so had to leave him to it once he started acting strange.



The film was very well received when it hit the big screen – why did you think it did so well at the box office?
When I first went for the audition I honestly did not anticipate quite how big it would become. I mean, I absolutely loved the script and was excited to possibly be a part of it as it was Adam Deacon’s film. I knew that it would never be rubbish!
But as the cinema release approached there was such a huge online and street buzz about Anuvahood that I had a feeling it was going to be big. The reason for its success was the fact that it was written for the people (its target audience) and not the critics and the industry; many critics slated it and said it wouldn't do well, but Adam knew what the viewers wanted and pushed on anyway. And look, numbers do not lie. I think the film tapped into many young people's emotions and they could relate too many of the issues, yet without having to feel down or negative about it, like many other films that have come out before. Too often, there is a negative stigma attached to youth and council estates; Anuvahood brought a fresh outlook on it and gave everyone something to laugh about and enjoy.
