Southampton are planning to bring their former midfield player Andrew Surman back to St Mary’s from Wolves a year after the ex-England under 21 international moved to Molineux for £1.2m.

South African-born Surman, 23, made only four starts with Wolves after leaving.

FORMER Saints midfielder Andrew Surman is being linked with a return to St Mary’s.

The former academy player left Saints last summer in a £1m switch to Wolves at a time when Saints’ own future was uncertain.

But the 23-year-old failed to make a big impression in the Premiership for Mick McCarthy’s side.

He only made three league starts, including on at Old Trafford when McCarthy came in for huge criticism for fielding a weakened side.

Surman also made four sub appearances in the Premiership, but his last outing of 2009/10 came back in early February.

He made two cup starts for Wolves as well.

The Southampton-raised attacking midfielder made his Saints debut in January 2006 and started 116 Championship games, plus another 17 off the bench.

He scored 15 league goals, including a hat-trick against Barnsley at St Mary’s in February 2007

I liked Surman and he would bring a balance to LH side and has played FB if needed, issue will be fee and his wages. Suspect on wages he wont be that mercenary like some as he was happy here and being an unused sub has no doubt out his career back. Think Wolves will look to recover as much of their fee and that could be a sticking point as will be plenty of decent players available for much less.

According to the Wolverhampton Express and Star, Andrew Surman is set to join Championship side Sheffield United as Wolves recouped the £1.2m they paid Saints a year ago.

Surman made just three league starts for Wolves and nine appearances in total.

Doubt we were prepared to pay that amount for Drew when we should be able to get two strong physical midfield players for that amount. shame as I think he could have rebuilt his career with us and can see him not being a regular in the sheff Utd side.

Academic now. He has signed a three year deal with Norwich.

That could be a good move for him as he will have muscle around him to help protect him.
