NEWCASTLE AT ST MARY'S Empty Re: NEWCASTLE AT ST MARY'S

A crucial month for saints, Newcastle, WBA at home Brighton away, minimum 5 points needed really should be 7. If we don't take the minim will be in trouble as have only played Man U of top 6. If he starts 2 up front we can win, if he starts Redmond and Tadic then we wont.

I am sure he will start Redmond and Tadic with just 1 up front (Austin) and predict a 1-1 draw.

Well Tadic and Redmond started and we drew, told you so!

Though he did start Long and Gabbadini just seems he thinks he cannot operate with the dynamic duo of Tad and Red. First half was poor after a bright start, usual slow slow play, sideways then back, little movement and Bertrand who used to bomb forward rarely ventured past the half way line. Time to stuff the reputations and play those who want to play for the shirt, Target or McQueen at LB, Hoedt at CB instead of VVD. JWP instead of Tadic and just about anyone including the ground staff instead of Redmond, we may then play like a team.

first minute we broke down the left, ball to Tadic, who instead of just crossing the ball, held up play, came back and within 5 seconds ball was back on our half way line, says everything about Tadic and the side. Tadic had a shot that went over then following a decent cross from Redmond tamely headed over when should at least have hit the target or headed back across goal. Newcastle had a shot that went just wide of the post and took the lead with another soft goal, corner kick was met with a weak header from VVD, shot came in that yoshida blocked but rebound fell to Newcastle player outside box who shot low and Forster some say wrong footed, I would say flat footed beaten going wrong way. You could see the confidence flow away and while we had a couple of decent crosses before half time no need for their keeper to make any saves.

Second half saw saints level then conceded again within a minute pale The goal showed what Gabbadini can do a diagonal ball into the box Gabba brought down to left of goal but back to goal, turned and worked his way to edge of area , made some space form his marker and shot low inside the near post. What should have brought us back into the game was a shambles at defending VVD slow and nowhere near his player, Shot Forster should have saved went back to Newcastle player who shot home rebound. Simply poor defending and VVD looks a long way from the player he used to be. Not sure if down to a rotten attitude or down to several months out and needing to get match fitness, regardless Hoedt should be starting.

finally Pellegerino saw the light and subbed Redmond, who went off to a mix of cheers (ironic) and boos. Looked like he had a strop but he was awful and no way should he be starting any game soon. A free kick summed him up, just outside the box, him, Tadic and Cedric over the ball (so 2 less in the box) .Tadic flicks a yard to Redmond, he passes tamely to the Newcastle wall, to howls of derision from saints fans.
Boufal came on for Redmond and he did more in 20 minutes than Redmond in last 5 games, and Davies for Romeau who didn't have a great game, seems that Lemina occupies some of the space he was used to. Equaliser was a gift. Long chased a ball into the box, knocked the ball to far in front but fortunately a Newcastle defender came in with a late challenge to take him out. Some say no penalty as had lost control of the ball but that is immaterial if the ball is still in play, it was a foul. Glad to see Gabbadini was not having any nonsense from Tadic, took the ball and blasted well into the corner, with goalie going right way. Newcastle should have been down to 10 men following two terrible challenges by Yedlin, first yellow card second as bad but Friend bottled it, yet another con artist faking as a qualified referee. Tense final few minutes, Davies cleared a header off the line and at the end we were happy for the whistle.

This will be a long season and problem is not just Pellegerino, it seems wider in the club. No team spirit, was the same last year which suggest the squad Reed has put together doesn't bond and the likes of Black have had a negative impact since arriving. Will need some radical surgery to sort, Pellegerino is not the man for that and know Reed seems untouchable. Need Mr Gao to send Les Reed to a distant province in China so we can get rid of his influences, Black, Watson, is he the worst goalkeeping coach in England?, Wilson

Forster 5 another unconvincing performance and a decent keeper could have stopped the second probably the first
Cedric 7 a good performance , gave his all and got forward well
Yoshida 6 defended well but slow in going forward and to negative
VVD 5 give the benefit of doubt still rusty not just cant be bothered, should be dropped for Hoedt until fit.
Bertrand 5 forgotten he can overlap and attack,
Romeau 5 not a good game by his standards, him and Lemina have to work out how to paly as a pair
Lemina 7 MOTD looks a good player, even better when Romeau was off, happy to carry the ball and can tackle
Tadic 5 occasional flashes of quality intermixed with lengthy periods of inactivity
Redmond 3 he simply cannot be starting for us, looks a championship player at best
Long 6 battled hard all day, ball control poor but he deserves a run in the side
Gabbadini 7 looked out of sorts first half but good goal and well taken penalty shows without doubt our best striker by far needs support
Subs
Boufal 6 a few nice touches, frustrating doesn't do the simple things, won the ball back a few time, Redmond watch and learn.
Davies 6 linked play well and goal line clearance to prevent us losing
Austin 5 didn't have very long and hardly had a touch.

Thanks for the great report Matty. I watched it on Sky and agree with most of what you say.

If Grino wants my advice.. Evil or Very Mad ....I'd change the team radically. I'd like to see this line-up, although, of course it won't be anything like this:

Cedric...Maya.....Hoedt.....Targett

Lemina.....Davis

Boufal....VVD.....McQueen

Gabbiadini

Definitely drastic, but maybe no worse than some line-ups this season.

Bertrand, Stephens, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Long, Austin on the bench. Best that Tadic and Redmond aren't even on the bench otherwise Grino would be sure to want to bring them on.

I wish I could say drop Forster but not sure we have anyone capable to replace him. I hope a new keeper is a priority for the January window.

Mike

afraid we are stuck with Forster, I would get rid of our useless goalkeeping coach Watson first, but wont happen as Reed's mate.

Think we definitely need 2 up front, so Gabbadini and either Long or Austin. It just gives the defenders something else to worry about which frees up some space for Gabbadini. See Adrian WHam goalie is looking for a move think might be better than both our choices

Cedric, Maya, Hoedt Targett
Romeau
Lemina Davies
Long Gabba Boufal (Home) JWP (Away)

Subs McQueen, Tadic, Austin, JWP/Boufal, Redmond or VVD.
