HOME TO BURNLEY

Can Saints return from the break to win? Left back could be a problem with Bertrand and Targett injured?

Would have been more comfortable if our full backs were fit, will also be interesting who he wants to play for Milan game. Hoping for a win but would not be surprised if a draw.

A win and a draw from Burnley and Milan would be a decent return

Well a comfortable victory, only negatives were injury to Targett and stupid penalty conceded by Tadic. Totally in command for the majority of the game, would have won by more but for Heaton in goal for Burnley. Started brightly with Austin bursting through forcing a corner, worry was he looked knackered. Saints nearly took the lead with a good cross from the left well met by Austin but an excellent save by Heaton. Tadic then had a shot saved though really lacked power. Targett went off with a calf injury, we didn't seem well organised as signalled a couple of times but no one warmed up, thought would be Yoshida but brought on McQueen. No one passed to him for 10 minutes which was not great. Tadic then got through on a 121 but his first touch let him down and Heaton blocked. Austin then nearly got on the end of a cross ball from Redmond.

Second half was similar to the first half saints camped in Burnleys half though Vokes had a chance from a corner but Austin made a great black. Heaton the made a decent save from Tadic following good work from McQuenn but from the corners saints took the lead. Ball to far post, Virgil headed back, Austin tried to bundle in and blocked but he forced the ball over the line. A scrappy goal but they all count. Then 5 minutes later from a corner from the left ball fell to Redmond who had space and shot first time which beat Heaton who was unsighted. Third goal came from good work by McQueen who grew into the game and running into the box was brought down, no arguing over penalty was obviously Austins and he duly obliged sending Heaton the wrong way.

Three up and time for Austin to make way for JRod. Should have been a clean sheet but Tadic gave away a needless penalty with a push right in front of ref. Forster could have saved if he just should his ground, he goes far to early for a big bloke.Davis nearly added a 4th with a run from deep and a few more shots peppered the Burnley goal.

Rome au was outstanding today, Classie very good, Austin did a lot of good work lay offs and winning the ball back on top of his goal, Virgil solid and Martina had another good game. He still takes up some odd positions but gets forward a lot and undoubtedly improved significantly. Will add scores later but a good performance, injuries though are a worry, expecting McQueen to play San Sirocco is a bit unrealistic.

Forster 6 little to do needs to stand more when facing penalties goes to early
Martina 8 really has improved, great going forward and improved defensively still the off positions but much improved
Fonte 7 steady and should have scored with a header
Virgil 8 always in control and his header lead to first goal
McQueen 7 grew in confidence during the game though will have harder games though
Romeau 9 immense today ran the middle of the park lost track how many blocks, tackles he made
Classie 7 good game all round
Davis 7 very busy, unlucky with one run through the heart of Burnley no energy left for his shot
Tadic 6 some decent play but silly penalty to conced though need to see on to
Redmond 7 had plenty of chances, his decision making not great but scored a good goal
Long 8 two goals but a lot more, worked hard, gave McQueen cover 1st half, good lay offs etc

Thanks Matty, I watched from the comfort of my armchair and agree with much of what you say.

I felt Tadic did better than you suggested and was definitely unlucky to have a penalty given against him. Fonte's first half clumsy tackle was much more worthy of a penalty for Burnley.
Not sure I share your view of Clasie's input. I felt he didn't do a lot.
Going forward, I didn't think McQueen put a foot wrong and I was extremely impressed....although reserving judgment on his defensive abilities as he was not really required to do any defending against Burnley.
