And here we go again.....the break seems to have passed very quickly this year.

Can Saints start by claiming 3 points?

Have to say not overly excited, Puel is Mr Boring, lost in Mane the unpredictable and excitement and signings mostly uninspiring. 1 - 1 for me

WATFORD AT ST MARY'S Empty Re: WATFORD AT ST MARY'S

Well I got the score right so do I get 3 points?

Pretty much as I was expecting, team look like not used to the formation or tactics yet. The 433 means we will get out muscled in midfield unless we have 3 strong midfield players. Including Ward Prowse in that 3 will not work! Attack looked a bit lightweight, no real aerial threat. Redmond is certainly no Mane. He was pretty poor first half, better second half and got the goal and had a couple of other decent shots but for some reason Long ended up wide quite often.

I think Koeman left his tactic book behind as was similar to Koeman playing Llong out wide, no one left up when defending a corner, all 11 in our box, madness.

Midfield was to light. Romeau was a mix of good and bad, towards the end got easily beaten a couple of time which lead to potential threats, Ward Prowse was poor and simply to lightweight to operate in centre of midfield, knocked of the ball to easily. How Classie didn't start makes me really worry about Puel. Davis was busy but never looked liked an attacking threat. Hojberg when he came on change the dynamics, ran with the ball and had a bit of a look of Schneiderlin about him.

Defence did not have a great deal to do. Yoshida did his usual some really good defending for most of the game then gave away a poor back pass that so nearly gifted Watford the winning goal. Targett did okay but twice in second half he showed his attacker down the outside then failed to cut out cross which went across goal, hope Bertrand not out to long. Cedric made a few errors at the back, poor clearances but he is still our best RB. Virgil looked strong but we missed Fonte's experience and with no aerial threat up front need Fonte to create some panic when we have a corner.

Attack, Long had poor service and ended up wide far to much, what a waste he needs to be played as the CF with scope to roam. Redmond falls over quite a bit and again light weight (That word sums up saints this season). Took his goal well and had another decent shot. Tadic played some neat touches and had a decent game.

Overall 433 could work but not with these players, we need 3 strong midfield players to make it work, strong 2 CBs (which means keep Fonte) with attacking FBs and a genuine goal scorer alongside Long, Redmond to come on as sub.

Puel heard him after the game on radio, so uninspiring. Looks like Wenger, obstinate. When we had an extra player with 15 minutes to go what does he do, sticks with the 433, when we could have gone 442 with a direct approach, Long and Austin not Austin in place of Long! He took of Cedric for his mate from Lyon, we were trying to win the game and Cedric was doing okay, we could have brought another midfield player on but of course that would have meant changing the 433. Picking JWP in front of Hojberg and Classie looked odd before game even more so after the game.

Watford were pretty poor, apart from goal think they only had 2 other shots, one a mis hit cross a couple of feet well over and one second half well wide and high. Very Physical and negative, hoping they will be in the relegation battle as very much a championship side. That is why disappointed, this was a poor team and on this performance we will get hammered by the top sides and the bottom teams will be able to out muscle us so am worried.

Forster 6 had very little to do
Targett 6 did okay but we need Bertrand back
Yoshida 6 did okay for most of the game then his usual gaffe which could have cost us the game
Virgil 7 lead the back 4 well though doesn't have that air of authority Fonte brings.
Cedric 5 again a mix of good and bad
Romeau 6 won some tackles but then missed some, not as good as Wanyama.
Davis 6 busy but not dominating
Ward Prowse 5 and that is being kind, really didn't do much, missed tackles poor passing, not sure he will be anything more than a sub for us.
Tadic 7 little defensive work but made a number of decent passes and added the flair
Redmond 6 poor first half, decent second half with his goal but not sure how he will fare against better teams
Long 6 poor service, one decent ball he got the free kick and player sent off, played to wide most of the game.

Subs
Hojberg 7 brought some pace and willing to run with the ball, everyone else wanted to pass all the time
Pied 6 didn't do anything wrong but not sure any better than Cedric
Austin no time to do anything

WATFORD AT ST MARY'S Empty Re: WATFORD AT ST MARY'S

Post  matty07uk Sun 14 Aug 2016, 2:16 pm

Meant to add a bit on referees at each game.

Roger East 3/10. Only decision he got right all day was the sending off. Just 30 seconds gone and JWP has his head nearly taken off with a dangerous high kick. If in the middle of game instant yellow card as reckless, as game as just started lets him off but not even speaks to the player. Sets the tome and allowed Watford to get away with heavy tackles and dissent. Time wasting is Gnomes main attribute, from the minute they scored was at it, East waved his arm frantically telling him to hurry up, finally books him in 84th minute. He knows will have no impact but shows he is "in charge". Twice he played advantage, Watford player stayed on ground claiming injury and once they lost the ball blew his whistle and took the game back, you either play advantage or you don't

A poor referee, was last year and simply not good enough to be officiating at this level

Thanks for that Matty.....very informative. The Sky highlights seem to have been cut from 45 to 30 minutes or less which is annoying. Ithought fron what I saw that Tadic did quite well.

Overall, a very depressing start to the season. After next week's game we are likely to be close to the bottom of the table..... and we may have to fight very hard this season to climb up.

I see Puel has now said he does not intend to sign another striker...... and the rumours linking Fonte to a move to Man United seem to be gathering speed

Thanks for the report Matty.

This selling and not replacing those sold mentality is real concern.

If Puel doesn't think we need another striker he is either a fool or hs is sitting on Les reed's lap as he pulls the strings. Now Austin supposed to be likely to leave, back to Apr or Everton. It seems no end to the madness
