Will be a good challenge as probably one of those clubs we would hope to finish above if looking to challenge for top 6, which I don't really think we are as far as squad. I think may end up being a draw

well a great result, though knackered as one of those games where you kick and head every ball knocked into the box. Saints reduced to 10 men for over 30 minutes due to wanyama being reckless again, pouring with rain, strong gusty wind, but saints showed a spirit missing from a couple of months ago. Saints opted for Yoshida at the back which was a surprise for me and with Pelle Mane and Long up front meant we only had 2 genuine midfield players Classie and Wanyama.

Saints started brightly passing the ball around and winning some early corners, though delivery was quite poor, short corners followed by a long ball deep to no one! Cedric nearly opened the scoring when he headed well from a ball from Long but saved by their goalie but no one around for the loose ball. didn't matter to much as saints took the lead not much later, the ball was knocked over from the left then hit back into the box and surprise to everyone Yoshida popped up in the right place to score in the middle and high in the net,. Pelle had a chance with a header a few minutes later but went wide as saints continued at pace. West Ham came more into the game as they moved the ball around on the ground, different from the Alladyce West Ham, Pelle had another opportunity but was unable to control the ball then Forster made a good save from a free kick on the right, frustrating as was a clear dive but Clattenburg seemed intent on getting as much face time on TV that he could. Aside from that the teams seemed to cancel each other out and second half started in same manner, Classie and wanyama having to work hard as outnumbered in midfield. Wanyama looked like fouled but nothing given and he then lunged at Payet, Stupid challenge that merited a yellow, should deduct when the player feigns injury, you would think Payet had been poleaxed but was not huge contact. Clattenburg seemed to go for a yellow, then remembered the cameras and went to his other pocket for a red. Romeau came on with mane being sacrificed, which was not a big loss as he had little impact in the game, surprised he starts every game as just doesn't look a goal threat.. West Ham brought on Carroll and I think a big mistake, prior to him coming on they played the ball on the ground as soon he arrives all about crossing into the box.

Obviously under a lot of pressure but saints could have scored a second. long pounced on a misplaced header beat the goalie to left of box but his finish had to much power and went just over. Pelle went off to be replaced by Austin and he proved a much more mobile threat and gave West ham problems to think about, Pelle was really to static and another one lucky to be starting now as Long and Austin are without doubt our best two strikers now. Song had a shot that went wide, to many times for my liking we allowed him to get close without closing down, Emikeke had a header that went wide from a good position and lost count of the number of crosses the defence dealt with. Austin had a great chance to make it safe when well positioned on right side of box but put his shot wide of the post after good work by Romeau. had to survive a scare at the back when Cedric sliced a clearance which went close to going into the goal and with the wind anything could have happened. Earlier Valencia did just as bad a tackle as Wanyamas, yet only a yellow by Clattenberg, just be consistent and fans would accept the wrong decisions, either 2 yellows or 2 reds, when you do one for one side and one for the other fans question why.

Five minutes of extra time JWP came on for Classie who was shattered and despite several crosses saints saw out safely

Forster 8 another strong performance, one good strong save some good crosses and kicking was better
Yoshida 8 hard to fault him, no messing a round when defending and scored the only goal.
Fonte 8 a captains performance leading from the back
Virgil 8 had Carroll in his pocket, really strong second half
Bertrand 7 tidy and efficient
Cedric 7 good positioning though his sliced clearance was a bit scary
Wanyama 3 simply not good enough, he hasn't learnt and for me Romeau should start even when Wanyama is back from suspension
Classie 8 though he had another great game, stats would be good to see, tackles and passes, amazing early season he looked weak1
Mane 5 anyone offers £30m bite their hands off, maybe will play better when the sun comes out
Pelle 5 not very mobile, control was poor and didn't really look like a threat.
Long 7 another great performance from long who played better when we were down to 10 men chasing down and holding the ball up.

Subs
Romeau 7 did a great job when he came on
Austin 6 linekd up well with Long and happy to battle so much more of a threat than Pelle which helped negate their man advantage
JWP only on for a few minutes.

Clattenberg really is obnoxious, he loves being the centre of attention and giving him the Manchester/London derbry's, just plays to his ego. Whne you look at the 3 tackles yesterday, Wanyama, Valencia and Byram how can he issue 1 red and 2 yellows? Byrams was by far the worst as went in with studs showing, over the top to catch Bertrands ankle and off the ground, everyone knows if a saints player did that with Clattenberg would be a red.

I just wish we used foreign refs as that might mean our ones raised their game and if they were not getting the big games an incentive there to improve
