Re: Hi, I am Summer Eguchi and I sing, dance and act

Post  SaintMike on Sun 25 Sep 2011, 11:57 pm

welcome Summer!!

Summer is a young (16) singer/dancer/actress. Found this about an interview she did for J-Pop World when she was 14............

"When I perform, I feel like I can do anything, like I'm free. It feels like I'm in another world where I'm always happy." - Summer Eguchi

Some people just know at a young age that they're destined to become a performer. For 14 year old Summer Eguchi there doesn't seem to have been any doubt about it. Born in Honolulu Hawaii, she was learning to dance the Hula and Tahitian at the age of five. By 10 she was playing the role of Princess Ying Yaoalak in the Hawaii Opera Theater's "THE KING & I" alongside Richard Chamberlain and Jan Maxwell. At 13 she was flying out to Los Angeles to record music with the producer Andrew Lane.

With songs like Love It and You'll Never Catch Me she already displays the talent of an accomplished singer with a very bright future stretching out in front of her. With a heritage that includes Hawaiian, Japanese and Filipino, Summer has made a point of giving back to her community by volunteering with organizations like the Hawaii Children's Cancer Foundation.

So come hear the story and listen to the music of this remarkable young lady who says "Catch your dreams and hold on to them tight. Dreams never fail if you believe in them."

On October 28, 2009 Summer Eguchi was kind enough to give an interview to Andrew from J-Pop World.

In April you traveled to LA to record music with the producer Andrew Lane. How did that come about?

To make a long story short... I was going to attend Hollywood Pop Jam, a performance camp during the summer where a couple of my friends went to last year. I messaged him on MySpace about that camp and another camp to talk about the songwriting. He messaged me back to have my mom call him and ended up recording my first 3 EP Singles in April.

What memories of that trip stand out the most?

Being in Disney Channel's green room where I met Daniel Curtis Lee and saw all the Disney Channel Stars getting ready. Meeting my new best friend and other kids in the industry who have been in other projects like "The Bratz Movie" and other recording artists.

Can you run us through what a typical recording day was like for you?

I recorded one song a day, so it took three days to record all of my songs. I would be recording in the recording studio for about two hours and then when we were done, we would go and meet people in the industry.

Can you pick one or two major things you have learned or developed the most from Andrew Lane and your experiences in LA?

What I learned the most during my recording sessions was that I could harmonize with my own songs. I think being in musicals and choir when I was younger taught me that skill.

What have been your most difficult or challenging moments during this time?

My most challenging moments during this time would be moving from Hawaii to California because my mom and I had to move away from my brothers and family for five months.

The song Love It was written specifically for you by Andrew Lane and Marissa Ship. Can you tell us more about this song and what it means to you?

It's about the feelings you get when you have a crush. Like how you get butterflies when you look at him or how his smile makes you feel good inside.

How can your fans buy this song and the rest of your music?

My fans can buy my songs from iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, or Amazon. You will need to do a Power Search for my songs on iTunes. Type in Artist: Summer, Song: Love It or You'll Never Catch Me or I Just Wanna Dance.

Love It and You'll Never Catch Me will both be featured in the short film "Ajumma! Are You Krazy?!!" How did that come about?

My mom shared the news about my music with family, friends, and people that I worked with in the entertainment industry in Hawaii. Director Laurie Foi from HOT "The King & I", was one of them. She is the producer working with director/producer Brent Anbe on "Ajumma! Are You Krazy?!!". When Laurie Foi heard the music, she called my mom and said that she thought it was a perfect song for the film that their working on, so she pitched it to Brent Anbe and they also decided that You'll Never Catch Me would work in the film too. I'm so excited about this movie. The movie had awesome reviews and additional shows were added to the Hawaii International Film Festival.

You also sing the more sassy song Ain't No Other Man. Do you find it easy to switch between songs that convey very different emotions?

I find it easy to switch songs, because I sing songs that I enjoy and I just love singing all types of genres from Pop, Country, R&B, Urban, Alternative Rock, Broadway, Hawaiian... you name it... I just need to find a way to relate to the song somehow and bring it out when I perform it.

Can you put into words the feeling you get when you are performing and everything is going perfectly?

When I perform, I feel like I can do anything, like I'm free. It feels like I'm in another world where I'm always happy.

I Just Wanna Dance is a good song to express one of your other loves: dancing. What type of dancing and training have you done so far?

I started dancing the Hula and Tahitian when I was five years old. So far, I've learned Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Hip/Hop... but currently training hard in Hip/Hop, Jazz Funk, Ballet, and learning to Breakdance. As far as the Breakdancing goes, I'm just doing it to learn the basics and have fun with a new style.

What else have you been doing in LA besides recording music?

I have been auditioning for different projects for TV, voice overs, commercials, and film. I also did some performances here, working hard on building my craft, such as going to dance classes everyday, acting classes, songwriting and performing techniques. I have also worked on some film projects, a Disney Wii Sing It Commercial Promo and National PSA for Stand Up 2 Cancer.

Musical theater has played an important role in your life. Can you tell us how you first got into it?

When I was about 8 years old, I joined Kapolei Performing Arts Center, a community musical production back in Hawaii. The first play I ever did was "Beauty and the Beast." And I continued doing musicals with different Theatre Companies since then.

When you were 10 you played the role of Princess Ying Yaoalak in the Hawaii Opera Theater's "THE KING & I." What was it like for you to work alongside veterans like Richard Chamberlain and Jan Maxwell?

It was an amazing experience working with two amazing actors like Richard Chamberlain and Jan Maxwell. They were so much fun to work with and they were very nice. That was a significant time of my life when I realized this is what I really want to do.

Was performing in this type of role something that came naturally to you, or was it a lot of hard work?

I would say that it did come naturally to me because it's what I love to do.

Tell us about your role in ACT "High School Musical on Stage." What memories stand out from that experience?

I played the part of a science geek and thespian. I remember before every show, the whole cast would be running around backstage telling everyone to break a leg. It was so much fun.

You've won several singing awards for someone still in their teens. Is performing for contests something you love to do, or is it a stressful event?

I love to do contests because you get the experience of being on stage and in front of an audience. It's not stressful for me, but I did love the adrenaline rush you get when I'm performing.

How do you prepare yourself before you perform in front of an audience? Do you have any rituals you do?

Practice, practice, practice...

And... I pray before going on stage.

You've also done a bit of hosting on Hawaiian television. Can you tell us about those experiences?

It was a great experience being a host on Brown Bags to Stardom and guest host on Stars of Tomorrow, because you learn a lot about yourself and each time you're on TV, you build confidence. I enjoyed meeting new people and there are so many talented kids back home in Hawaii.

Do your friends ever tease you about any of the activities you do, or are they all pretty supportive?

My friends in Hawaii are supportive and cheering me on in what I'm doing. My friends here in L.A. are also supportive because they are in the industry, have the same reasons why we're here and we encourage each other.

Can you tell us the top three ways that fans of your singing can help to advance your career?

1. Buy my music on iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon, & Napster, it's only 99 cents Smile
2. Request my songs for airplay on the Radio
3. Spread the word about me... Summer & my music Smile My music myspace page is myspace.com/summereguchi and follow me on twitter.

Who have been some of your major musical inspirations?

My musical inspirations are Judy Garland, Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, and Justin Bieber.

Let's get to know a little more about you. What has it been like growing up with five brothers?

It's awesome! My four older brothers are amazing and I really look up to them. They always look out for me. My baby brother is so cute, he's only two, but I love singing to him and teach him how to dance.

How important has your family's support been to you?

It's so important to have my family's support, because they are what keeps me grounded and they inspire me to be better at what I do.

Your heritage includes Hawaiian, Japanese, Filipino, Chinese, Spanish, and Irish. Do you see yourself as fortunate to have such a diverse background, or is it not something you really think about?

I think I am so fortunate, because that's what makes me different and unique. I love the fact that I know and always learning different customs.

One Japanese tradition your family did was to make mochi on the Sunday before New Year's Eve and eat it with Ozoni (New Year's Soup). Can you share some of your memories of it and what it meant to you?

We didn't get a chance to learn how to pound mochi the old traditional way, but made mochi with the mochi machine. When the mochi was ready, the family would form the mochi by hand at the kitchen table and everyone would be covered in mochi flour.

Having Ozoni for the first meal of the Day for New Year's meant "Good Luck", especially if you eat the same amount of mochi as your age. So if you are 14 years old and you eat 14 mochi in your soup, then you're supposed to get good luck for the year.

Btw, as a Hawaiian what did you think about seeing someone from your state run and get elected to be president of the United States?

I think it's awesome that he's from Hawaii.

Outside of your musical and acting activities, what do you do for fun and relaxation?

Actually I have fun when I go to my dance classes, but I like going to the beach, movies and just hanging out with my friends when I can. I like learning new songs and learning to play the guitar, it is my relaxation. I don't think I can get music out of my system.

Do you have any favorite TV shows, movies, book etc. that you enjoy?

I like watching the shows on Disney and Grey's Anatomy.

What type of things do you do with your friends?

We would just hang out, watch a movie or go to some kind of event.

Do you have anything else you want to bring up or comment on?

Catch your dreams and hold on to them tight. Dreams never fail if you believe in them.

Anything is possible if you keep believing... no matter what your goal is ... never give up!

Do you have a final message to all your fans?

I wanted to thank everyone for all their love and support! It means so much to me and to see everyone backing me up in what I love to do! I can't wait to get more of my music and entertain you all... I am so excited! I love you all! God Bless!

You're so beautiful and sexy, I envy you your looks. Do you have to work hard to keep your figure or does it come naturally? Is there a part of your body/appearance that you're specially proud of? Anything you'd change?
