A trademark of yours is to let the intro of your first track play and then say 'hi' just before the vocals started. Did that first start by accident or what made you first think of doing it?

That happened during the request show on radio 1. a show that was supposed to be a three month 'filler' that lasted 12 years! it was right after the Top Forty on sunday nights, a huge audience, so it was a way of holding the audience and keeping them intrigued --- just a little mystery of when I would say hi. It was fun!

Ha ha, there was never a vacancy!! As Ive said earlier, Radio 1 was all male till I persuaded them otherwise. I spent years knocking on that door. I think they took me on as the 'token' woman because they were under so much pressure for being so sexist. I'd worked on newspapers, magazines, made television documentaries. I felt comfortable being in front of a microphone, it felt a natural place to be. Its strange now that I'm in the Guinness Book Of Records for having the longest continuous career as a broadcaster of a music show! I thought I would last one year, max, at Radio 1.

Yoko Ono I felt was a very interesting person. More recently a guy called Artwork from Magnetic Man who told me all the origins of dubstep that began at a record shop in Croydon! The hardest people to interview tended to be the over indulged pampered American super star 'entertainers', and I think its more because they are so pampered that makes them cut off from the real world. Lou Reed was a hard one to crack, but charming in the end! As was Neil Diamond.

Ah…there's a question. Its so political! I sort of support Man City because I have roots in Salford and other parts of Lancashire.. I support (not very much though!) the Seagulls because I lived in Brighton for so many years, and a bit Brentford because my grandparents lived there. Other people close to me support Man U and Liverpool. What can you do? But the sense of theatre at a big game is breathtaking.

I have lots of memories of visiting Southampton. Its where I did my first tv audition for BBC, and then many many shows for what was the local ITV station Southern TV --- so its all TV linked. Lots of fun. Oh and embarking from Soton onto the QE2 to be ship's DJ for a week. A wonderful experience! You just glide down Southampton Water without realising that the ship has got going!

Have you ever used bad language on the air? Ever been in trouble with your bosses?

The most likely thing to happen is to play, unwittingly, a tune with some very unbroadcastable content. Its happened before many times. I wouldnt do it deliberately because it causes the producers enormous problems. And their job! But I understand that artistes want to have their work uncensored. There were many more pitfalls in the age of playing vinyl --- like playing a record at the wrong speed, or playing the wrong side, or the uncleanedup 'original album version'.

Nowadays I commission guest mixes on my show, where a dj or artiste can play and mix whatever they like, its their 'blank canvas'. I invite artistes from all over the world to take part, and they may not know the BBC rules of acceptability. It might be quite innocent like libelling a brand name, not always the obvious topics such as sex and swearing and gratuitous violence. But popular music mirrors what is going on in peoples' lives, so we try to keep a fair balance.

I dont think there are sexy voice awards! I won Caner Of The Year Award in the same year that I was awarded the MBE by the Queen, that was quite an eyebrow raiser.

I didnt fit in really, somewhat of a raver even then. I went to a very academically upscale school, but have to grudgingly admit they gave me a good education, and an ability to go on wanting to know things. Reason I LOVE the internet!

"3 What hobbies do you pursue? Do you play any sports?"

I dont have time for hobbies, music is consuming passion and there are always hundreds of new tunes waiting to be heard. Im still a news junkie, love Newsnight etc. I love swimming when I can get near any water, but dont really like gym clubs where they come at you with a clipboard.

"4 Do you drive? What would be your ideal car to drive?"

I have driven for years, but owning a car and living in London are not very compatible. My ideal car would be a hybrid of several…sporty, four wheel drive, convertible, fast , lots of leather seats and a very bass heavy soundsystem!

That's such a difficult question. The names above are some. I think we are going through a new golden age of pop at the moment with the urban movement.

Have been asked, yes, but not really my thing. I used to ice skate when I was a child, so I appreciate how difficult it is to do! I wish all these shows didnt have to have the elimination factor. But that seems to be what brings viewers in. Ah, I said the word 'factor' there. Dont get me started….
