4-2-1-2-1 or 4-4-2? Empty 4-2-1-2-1 or 4-4-2?

What's it likely to be now?

'New addition necessary to boost new look attack By Rob Casey

In organising a straight loan swap with Sheffield United to bring in Jordan Robertson for Nathan Dyer until the end of the calendar year, Saints supremo Jan Poortvliet has stated his intentions clearly for ‘motivated’ players to figure in his new formation.

Having seemingly abandoned his 4-2-1-2-1 formation, Poortvliet may look to the loan market again for further players to fit in to the new 4-4-2 system. But, at least for now, Robertson’s signing will provide further options for the Saints, now opting for two strikers to lead the line and feed off balls from wide.

“This is the best deal for both players,” Poortvliet told the Daily Echo on Friday. “Nathan needs to play regularly and we have several players in the same position. It is a short term deal and we will reassess things in December.”

It is certainly true that with only one start so far this season, Dyer is currently surplus to requirements and will benefit from regular football. First team action is something that 20-year-old Robertson may struggle to get too often though, yet he has a better chance of it at Southampton than at Sheffield United it seems.

David McGoldrick, Stern John and Tomas Pekhart are Saints’ current strikers, with Grzegorz Rasiak and Marek Saganowski currently away on extended loans. The move for Robertson therefore strengthens the squad much more than keeping Dyer.

“We will be getting a motivated player in return who is a promising talent. Jordan is a goalscorer and a powerful striker, who can play on both sides as well. I have followed him for some time and was thinking of signing him whilst I was in Holland. He is keen to show what he can do.”

Robertson only made his debut for the Blades in midweek, and has no experience at Championship level. However, he has seen plenty of first-team action on previous loan moves. Spells at Northampton, Oldham and Torquay, as well as four goals in 12 starts plus another three from the bench at SPL side Dundee United last season, have proven that Robertson has talent.

To begin with, he will only be used as cover, and should make the odd appearance from the bench, but with injuries, suspensions and fitness doubts, there is a good chance that he will be called upon to start at some point in the near future. It’s therefore good news to see Saints move in the loan market for another promising youngster.

We don’t know how long Poortvliet will stick by his new 4-4-2 system. It could just be temporary or maybe he has realised that this is the way that the players work best. If so, it would somehow make a mockery of all the talk earlier in the season of how total football suits the youngsters and is the reason why so many young players will want to be a part of the Dutch revolution at St Mary’s. Well, it looks like the revolution has stalled, but if results continue to pick up, then no-one will mind at all, least of all Robertson, who looks set to benefit the most from JP’s new preference for two out-and-out strikers in the side.

Which two players would work best in combination up front? Should Poortvliet pick two that complement each other, or just the best pair at his disposal?'

They did play a different way yesterday. More direct at times with the whole team looking a bit better.
Doncaster are no great shakes but a win is a win. A nervous start followed by a gradual improvement. Davis saved a goal bound effort on five minutes and was a star again. Schneiderlin was also very important to us and will be missed.James grew in stature and made some good tackles and runs forward linking up well.
With him and John certain to be out for a while we now have the problem of replacements.John will be the easiest to replace with Pekhart available but Schneiderlin will be a different matter.
Still we have Norwich at home and with Perry having had a rest he should be ready to play. Another three points will help us for the rest of a very hard month.

Poortvliet still winging it

By Chris C Sunday, 12th October 2008

You have to hand it to Jan Poortvliet, he is certainly determined to make his 'revolutionary' 4-2-1-2-1 formation work.

While less determined managers would have conceded defeat after a return to a more familiar 4-4-2 helped settle a side losing confidence and games, he has moved quickly in the loan market to address the weaknesses up front.

Lallana's emergence has solved the problem of where you can find a player intelligent and mobile enough to play in the hole, as shown with his deserved call-up to the England U21s.

Up front Poortvliet has gone for numbers bringing in Pekhart and Robertson to add height and competition to the lone striker role that has rotated between David McGoldrick and Stern John. In fairness, these numbers do allow Poortvliet to have a Plan B to play two strikers when his young side are struggling.

One of the key problems for Jan Poortvliet all season has been a lack of genuine attacking wingers able to play in his front three. Dyer, Wright-Phillips, McGoldrick, White, Thompson, Lallana, Robertson and of course the injured Holmes, have all been tried on the flank, while Rudi Skacel remains on the sidelines for reasons unknown.

However, only Holmes has nailed down a position on the wing, until his untimely injury. Rather than admit defeat, Poortvliet has brought in Millwall's Smith and Strasbourg's Gasmi on loan.

While not the biggest, the two players add pace and trickery to allow Saints to break at pace and hopefully provide much better delivery into the box as well as a goal threat, although with a combined career goal tally of two goals Saints may well be better served to indeed play two genuine strikers.

Poortvliet will be hoping that the 4-1 drubbing away to Coventry is a blip on Saints' steady improvement and that the new players once established and fully fit will add vital competition and versatility to a squad already suffering from Saints' traditional injury blight.

If they cannot, then the Dutch Total Football experiment may well have to concede to that most English of traditions, 4-4-2.

Personally I would like to see 4-4-2 being played. It does seem to give us more width when attacking. Defence would be a lot better if team could play in a more compact style.
